As Mayor Eric Garcetti spoke amid Wednesday’s George Floyd protests, he addressed the city’s plans to cut $100 million to $150 million from the LAPD’s budget.

The LAPD’s 2020 budget it about $1.8 billion, meaning the $150 million cut would be 7.5 percent of the total budget.

City Council president Nury Martinez introduced the motion to cut the LAPD funding at today’s council meeting, writing within it, “We need a vision for our city that says, ‘There is going to be justice.'” The motion later adds, “We need to rethink what it is that makes people safer and communities stronger.”

In response, the Los Angeles Police Protective League tweeted out:

“To declare that the work police officers perform, that we’ve been directed to do, is designed to harm people of color while Ms. Martinez repeatedly sends us into harm’s way is divisive, disrespectful, and certainly is no profile in courage.”

“We’ve made cuts because of COVID-19, it’s time to also make cuts because racial justice is something worth fighting for, and something worth sacrificing for,” Garcetti said.

Garcetti then added plans to LAPD practices, including the incorporation of “de-escalation training,” while L.A. Police Commission President Eileen Decker added that they will “publish department policy that will require officers to intervene when other officers use excessive force, and requires officers to report misconduct immediately.”
