LAPD officer Erica McAdoo died from complications due to COVID-19 on July 3. McAdoo was a senior detention officer and is the first death due to the virus the department has announced.

On June 1, L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said there were 1,309 coronavirus cases in jail facilities across the county, with 1,005 recorded among inmates and 304 within staff members.

In mid-May, LAPD announced the largest reported outbreak within the department, as 17 recruits tested positive for COVID-19 at the Ahmanson Recruit Training Center in Westchester. The class was temporarily suspended as the trainees recovered.

LAPD said that 287 department employees are currently in quarantine due to testing positive for the virus, or being exposed.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced last week that the state may release more inmates to stem COVID-19 outbreaks in prisons.
