The landlord of a pregnant Venice woman who was raped and fatally stabbed witnessed some of the attack and tried to stop it to no avail, he told reporters.

Arnold Springer said he shined his light into her home after hearing screams and told a suspect to stop, that he was going to call police, but the attack continued as the landlord then headed to a phone. The attacked happened about 10 p.m. Tuesday at 1660 Electric Avenue in Venice. Eun Y. Kang, 39, was four-months pregnant when she and her twins perished in the stabbing murder.

“I heard her scream, and I turned on the lights in my room and outside — the porchlight — and I had my flashlight,” Springer said (see video from KCAL9 news). “I had it on shining my light in there.”

“She was screaming `No. Don't do that. Don't do that. No.' I shined my light in there and I saw him. He was raping her.''

Springer said he implored the man to stop: “Don't do that. Stop that. I'm going to call the police. And I banged on the glass window with my flashlight and he didn't stop.''

Police say that when the arrived they ran into a suspect as he was fleeing. They believe the attacker might have entered Kang's duplex through an unlocked sliding glass door. The suspect, 22-year-old Boneetio Kentro Washington of Culver City, has been charged with three counts of murder with special circumstances.

Kang was a well-liked owner of a dry cleaning business on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly HIlls.

Washington reportedly has been institutionalized for mental issues. Police are investigating whether he can be tied to other area crimes such as burglaries.
