20-Year-Old U.S. Marine Officer Killed in Traffic Crash on Interstate 5

OCEANSIDE, CA (December 15, 2021) – 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Alberto Lucio lost his life after helping in a traffic crash on Interstate 5.

The incident happened before 3:30 a.m. of December 6th on southbound Interstate 5 near the Northern San Diego County military base .

According to CHP, Lucio came to a halt to assist the driver of an SUV that crashed into the center barrier and turned over.

A passing box truck then hit Lucio as he was helping the SUV occupants. Tragically, officers pronounced Lucio dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, medics took the 36-year-old SUV driver, Darryl Sheffey, and his passenger, a 31-year-old lady, to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla for treatment of serious injuries.

The CHP said that after his release from the hospital, Sheffey is expected to face charges on various counts.

Moreover, the Oceanside police will release additional information once it becomes available.
