For 13 years, the Latino arts organization in Highland Park has organized this monthly open mic series for poets in the community. Hosted by Karineh Mahdessian, the latest event includes Hector Flores, singer of the seven-piece East L.A. folk band Las Cafeteras; Peter J. Harris, a poet and essay writer (Bless the Ashes, Poetry and The Black Man of Happiness: In Pursuit of My Unalienable Right); and Luis J. Rodriguez, the 2014 Los Angeles Poet Laureate. Known for his 1993 autobiography, Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A., Rodriguez has authored 15 books, and is co-founder of Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore in Sylmar.
