LA Fashion Week- Boho Style at Vibiana, Bangin’ Bods at Viper Room & St. Patty’s Day Prancing

Concept FW‘s arty cool cluster of events and installations and Project Ethos’ massive (made for mass appeal) event at Avalon; The Gallery LA‘s lineup this weekend at Sunset-Gower Studios and countless boutique bashes celebrating designer creations in more intimate spaces (Sue Wong in a Hollywood estate, Skin.Graft in their downtown retail digs)… A two-week long smattering of unrelated events, LA Fashion Week once again, felt disjointed and hard to keep track of.

Our opinion of this season’s shows is as jumbled as the offerings were. Some were good, some not so good, and some fashion fetes were less about clothes than an excuse to party (see photo below from Junker Designs‘ Viper Room vamp-fest). Now that another mixed bag is in the bag, one thing is clear, however: a viable -and cohesive- LA Fashion Week is no closer within reach than it was before. And maybe that’s ok.

Billing itself as “Los Angeles’ newest and most ambitious fashion week event,” Style Fashion Week at Vibiana got some attention for its va-va-voom-ish opening night featuring the figure flattering retro wear of Stop Staring. We opted to check out Wedensday’s big show by Gypsy 05, a decidedly less restricting line of boho cotton dresses and separates. Indeed, as a Maxi mama (we love the nightgown-like comfort of long flowing dresses), we’ve been wearing Gypsy 05 ever since ogling pics of celebs such as Christina Aguilera and Kate Hudson rocking the relaxed frocks in a few magazines.

The line hasn’t abandoned its bread and butter maxis (obviously, see pics), but they have fancied ’em up and played around with different cuts which, for the most part, were flattering and fun, if not ground-breaking. The separates for guys and gals brought exactly the kind of relaxed boho style we expected, though again, nothing innovative. Styling and production of the show felt fresh, however: glam yet earthy makeup and hair and a projected backdrop featuring seasonal imagery.

A couple nights later, we popped by a different kind of style event. “Dirty Glam” at the Viper Room, hosted by Junker Designs was less a display of duds than we thought it’d be, but there was still lots to look at, it was St. Patty’s Day, after all. Hosted by KROQ’s Stryker, the Junker hunker promised a “truncated collection on models roaming in the clothing’s natural environment throughout the night.”

Hard to tell exactly which these were (people dress pretty wild on St. Patty’s and we were on the Sunset Strip) but the stage had our attention most of the time anyway. Live performances included Die Fast, Run Devil Run, and Lady Sinatra (the latter -fronted by Viper doorman Joe “Bunny” Holiday- impressed us most with infectious songs, raw, thrashin-good instrumentation and loads of attitude).
