As a La Canada Flintridge neighborhood dug out from a mudslide that damaged at least 40 homes and made nine of them uninhabitable, the city's mayor picked a fight with the federal government, alleging that U.S. Forest Service failed to prevent the mud from flowing down mountains it controls as part of the Angeles National Forest.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger responded to the allegation by saying that he would “appoint a blue ribbon commission to look into” Mayor Laura Olhasso's claims.

County Supervisor Mike Antonovich joined in the anti-federal chorus, blaming the U.S. Forest Service for allegedly failing to do its part to contain late summer's record Station Fire before it got out of control. The blaze scorched massive swaths of the Angeles National Forest and has thus devoured the trees, shrubs and roots that are nature's defense against mudslides.

Under a downpour Saturday a wall of mud was sent down Ocean View Drive in La Canada Flintridge about 3:30 a.m.
