L Bar — a Sunset Boulevard warehouse bar that's been gaining popularity despite its Google Maps obscurity and complete lack of signage — is closing.

Well, there goes LA Weekly's entry for “Best Backup Bar” in our upcoming “Best of L.A.” issue. We loved L Bar for all the reasons it's likely going out of business:

Only a roomful of awesome people knew about it, and row upon row of velvet seating made for a V.I.P. experience without the snobbish Supper Club line that otherwise comes hand-in-hand. The DJ was always good, and the drinks damn cheap.

After we got tired of sardining our way through the slut mob at next-door Boulevard 3, or of dropping two weeks' wages at Drai's/Lexington/the like, a great night on the Hollywood stretch of West Sunset always ended at L.

Its all-out, almost obstacle-course-style dance party left you drenched to the bone in beer sweat, every time. It was almost cleansing!

“After nearly 3 years of booze, music, dancing and some EPIC nights, L will be closing it's doors next week,” the bar wrote on its Facebook page early yesterday. “We have one last weekend together to do what we all do best – party. So lets send the old girl off proper for L's farewell evening on Saturday August 4th. We look forward to drinking with you, one last time!”

The bar's “about me” section makes a pretty good tombstone:

No address, No sign, No jokers… A bar/lounge that celebrates being the best f'n anti-Hollywood establishment ever in the history of the Universe… Cheap, heavy on booze, mason jars, and cool ppl. Show up

End of an era, for real. We're trying to get in touch with L Bar for some explanations (because we sort of feel like our No. 1 booty call just crept out without leaving a note), but the phone keeps on ringing and ringing. As elusive in death as in life!
