L.A. Weekly writers earned four National Arts & Entertainment Journalism (NAEJ) awards, highlighted by an Art/Design Critic of the year win by Shana Nys Dambrot.

The NAEJ awards, presented by the Los Angeles Press Club, took place Sunday, December 4, at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, with journalists from across the U.S. being recognized for their work in the industry.

Nys Dambrot earned the Art/Design Critic of the Year award, beating out Carolina Miranda of the Los Angeles Times and  Mimi Zeiger of The Architect’s Newspaper/Metropolis Magazine.

Being recognized for her L.A. Weekly pieces titled, “The Future of NTFs is Female Too,” “The Cheech is a Jewel in the SoCal Culture Crown,” and “Lorna Simpson: Everything is Illuminated,” the judges commended Nys Dambrot for her critiques, saying her “criticism is clever, proactive and dynamic.”

The highly decorated writer also received an award for a Village Voice piece titled, “Susan Rothenberg’s Mythic Horses Are Back in the Flesh.”

Keeping with the first place victories, L.A. Weekly food editor Michele Stueven was recognized for her feature story on TV producer Phil Rosenthal and his foray into the food world through his popular “Somebody Feed Phil” Netflix series.

Music editor for L.A. Weekly, Brett Callwood, was also recognized with a third place award for his feature on the Canadian comedy sketch team, the Kids in the Hall. Callwood spoke with the group about how they revived their show on Amazon Prime Video, as well as the development of their two-part documentary, “Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks,” which is also streaming on Prime.
