Numerous L.A. Weekly reporters, critics, columnists, editors and freelancers are finalists for the Southern California Journalism Awards, to be held June 28 at the Millennium Biltmore, honors bestowed each year by the 500-member Los Angeles Press Club.

Among the finalists, culled from more than 900 entries to the Press Club, are film critic Amy Nicholson, nominated as Entertainment Journalist of the Year and also as a finalist in the Review category for “The Boxtrolls Is the Cutest Kiddie Cartoon Ever Made About Hitler” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction: At Least the Product Placement is Interesting.” L.A. Weekly Restaurant Critic Besha Rodell is nominated under Criticism for her “Barton G Review: A Fiasco From Miami, Now in Beverly Hills.”

Staff writer Hillel Aron is nominated for Print Journalist of the Year and for best News Feature, ”Barbarians at the Gate: The Cultural War Over the Last True Skid Row in America.” Former staff writer Gendy Alimurung also is nominated for best News Feature, for “Gimme Shelter: Living Homeless in a Shelter Gave the WeHo News Publisher the Story of His Life,” as well as for best Column, “Candyland.”

Arts and Culture Editor Zachary Pincus-Roth is nominated for the Press Club's Humor/Satire award for his articles “Cards Against Humanity: L.A. Edition” and “L.A. Weekly April Fools Day,” and also under the Entertainment Feature category for “Can TV Save India?” 

In the Investigative/Series category, freelancers Ani Ucar, Chris Walker and Elana Pritchard are nominated for their three-part probe of the Los Angeles County jail system, “On the Inside.” The series includes “L.A. County Jail Plan Is a $2 Billion Blunder That Embraces Incarceration, Not Treatment, For Mentally Ill“; “Inside the Gay Wing of Men’s Central Jail, It’s Not Shanks and Muggings but Hand-sewn Gowns and Tears” and “When a Cartoonist Landed in L.A. County Jail, She Drew What She Saw Using Only a Golf Pencil.”

Ucar is further nominated under the Videographer category, for her companion video, “EXCLUSIVE: Inside the Gay Wing of L.A. Men’s Central Jail.”

Freelancer Eve Weston is nominated for Entertainment Commentary, for “Does 'Into the Woods' Punish a Wife for Adultery and Not a Husband?“
