True Grit, the 1969 western that won John Wayne his first and only Oscar, gets a special 50th anniversary release as part of Turner Classic Movie’s yearlong Big Screen Classics series through Fathom Events. TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz will bookend the movie with his remarks. A lovable, lightly comic western and a superb vehicle for this iconic movie star, Henry Hathaway’s film contains one of the Duke’s most stirring moments: a charge on horseback accomplished with reins in teeth and a gun in each hand. Laemmle Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre (also playing May 8 at the Playhouse 7, Claremont 5, and Town Center 5), 8556 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, Sun., May 5, 1 p.m.; $13. (310) 478-3836, laemmle.com.
