Limited/art-house

Friday, June 21

Wheeler Winston Dixon is an anomaly: an unpretentious avant-gardist. A long-time film studies professor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Dixon has authored more than thirty books and dozens of scholarly articles. But his work as an experimental filmmaker remains underappreciated. Los Angeles Filmforum’s program, Wheeler Winston Dixon: From Ancient History to A Hundred Years from Today, offers a rare opportunity to interact with one of the most respected names in academia. Dixon will screen his work for the first time ever in Los Angeles. Many of the shorts on display are collage pieces composed of preexisting imagery, artfully reworked into mysterious aesthetic objects. He will appear in person to comment on his work and field questions.

Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood; Fri., June 21, 7:30 p.m.; $10. (323) 466-3456, lafilmforum.org.

Also opening Friday, June 21: Anna, Better Than Love, Burn Your Maps, Child’s Play, The Command, The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir, Nightmare Cinema, The Quiet One, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, Toy Story 4, Wild Rose
