UPDATE at 4:05 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9: Read our latest about why officials think this was the product of a hack, here.
A downtown Los Angeles digital traffic sign was apparently hacked recently to state, “READ A FUCKING BOOK.”
L.A. Weekly contributor Daina Beth Solomon snapped a photo (above) of the variable message LED sign last night. The portable sign was near Bunker Hill.
The big question, of course, is who dunnit?
]
It wasn't immediately clear.
But the sign reflects a Twitter hashtag, #ReadAFuckingBook, that's been circulating since 2010. It's often used to punctuate a perceived act of ignorance.
“Not knowing #PaulMcCartney is almost as bad as the idiots that didn't know #MayaAngelou #Readafuckingbook,” is an example of one such Twitter message.
Other L.A. Twitter users, including a man who posed for a selfie of a one-finger salute, snapped photos of the trailer, perhaps in anticipation that the sign would be un-hacked today.

For some reason, we feel like curling up with a good book.
