We should have guessed.

An L.A. teen has been charged as a key player in that spring break riot in Santa Barbara over the weekend. Seventeen-year-old Desmond Louis Edwards faced numerous charges in connection with Saturday night's unrest in the community of Isla Vista.

Authorities say the suspect …

… swung a backpack full of bottles that hit a UC Santa Barbara cop in the head, sending him to a hospital for 20 stitches.

Some consider those alleged actions to have been a flashpoint for rioting that resulted in broken windows and rock-and-bottle throwing. More than 100 people were arrested during the annual and notorious Deltopia party.

As many as 25,000 people were on the streets of Isla Vista as nearly 200 cops tried to clear them out.

The Santa Barbara District Attorney's office charged Edwards with suspicion of mayhem, resisting an officer's orders, assaulting a cop, causing great bodily injury and committing a violent offense, according to a statement.

Prosecutors sought to try him as an adult.

The L.A. teen was due in court today, but TV station KEYT reported that the date has been postponed until Thursday.
