0 4When it comes to short filmmaking, a unique kind of talent is usually on display. Working within time constraints of a short is only the beginning. Character development, a full bodied narrative and engaging the viewer are often more challenging than with a feature length movie.

The L.A. Shorts International Film Festival has built a reputation for spotlighting the best of these works. Marking 25 years this month, it is presented online this year (via its YouTube channel) and there’s lots to mark your calendar for throughout July. Accredited by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences (60 of its selections have been nominated and 16 have won the Oscar) and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), this year’s offerings run the gamut, with shorts from around the globe and subjects and genres including documentary, animation, comedy, music and more, with each category rolled out weekly. Thematic programs covering teens, crime, adventure, suspense, sci-fi and more are now playing.

This week, look for lots of powerful dramas, web series, music/dance and content from other countries to debut on YouTube channel. Get access to 2021 complete film lineup during the month of July for $2.99 (it’s a recurring charge but you can cancel at anytime). YouTube.com/TheShortsNetwork
