Located in the Pellissier building, which also houses the Wiltern theater, Cinema Makeup School offers up-to-date education to aspiring makeup and special effects artists. Graduates of their Master Makeup program are invited to submit character ideas throughout the year for live demos at industry conventions. For this year's WonderCon convention in Anaheim, Marvel villain Apocalypse was chosen along with Ryuk from the Japanese manga, Death Note. Director of Admissions Lee Joyner originally sculpted the prosthetic makeup for Apocalypse at Comic-Con last year. The initial build time for the character took approximately 3-4 months, with an additional month this year to modify it for WonderCon. Cinema Makeup School's resident character actor and social media manager Mick Ignis sat through hours of makeup application to become both Apocalypse and Ryuk in time for WonderCon. Here is an insider's look at the preparation and execution of a fully realized character project from one of the world's leading makeup schools and their emerging talent.
