Just when Pomona commuters thought rush hour was petering out last night —

Ba-BOOM. Rubbery kibbles 'n' bits met tumbling hoops of man-rubber at 8 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the Pomona Freeway, when two big rigs decided to make everyone's lives a lot more difficult for a few hours.

It must have been a blur, because no one can really explain how too two giant rectangles hurdling in the same direction ended up in such a flow-blocking clusterfuck. All Los Angeles County Fire Captain Sammy Padilla could tell Fox11 at the scene was this:

After all was said and done, one of the monster trucks ended up completely overturned while the other's cab went up in flames.

Time to play Bad vs. Worse:

Which truck would you have rather been driving? The one that careened across the highway on its side and slammed into the Azusa Avenue overpass, or the one whose “whole cab was fully engulfed” in hot fiery hell?

Wait, trick question —

Padilla clarified that the truck on its side posed the real danger. “Our concern now is as they … lift it upright, that these saddle tanks that you see underneath can rupture,” he told Fox11 at the scene. (Which would make for an explosion to make the “Call of Duty” battlefield look tame.)

In the end, the big-rig dogpile was a job for 50 firefighters — enough to close the freeway in both directions. Two westbound lanes didn't open until 11:30 p.m., and two eastbound lanes until 1:30 a.m. Though officials have promised everything will be back up and running by 5 a.m., don't be surprised if you hear some kibble bullets shooting up into your Corolla's underarmor on your way to work this morning.
