The 97th annual L.A. Metropolitan Tennis Open Championships stand as a reminder that, although L.A. may seem less of a locus lately for tennis mania, its audience remains unswayed as the event heads toward its second century. Arthur Ashe played at UCLA, and Pete Sampras got his start in Palos Verdes, so you never know what talent might be percolating today. Women’s and men’s singles, doubles and mixed hit the court, competing for trophies and triumphs. And if your neck is still sore from New Year’s Eve, the back-and-forth of watching that ball should help work out the kinks.
