Readers of Travel + Leisure think Los Angeles is one of the world's unfriendliest cities.

“While the city is filled with good-looking people,” the publication says, “many of them come off as pretentious or holier than thou.”

But college students seem to think L.A. rolls out the red carpet for them. A new ranking of the “10 Friendliest College Towns in America” by Skout, an app “for meeting new people,” places Los Angeles at No. 2.

The winner, Madison, Wisconsin, has a population (243,000) that's less than that of Long Beach (469,000).

In other words, it's one of two relatively small cities (Ann Arbor, Michigan, population 117,000, is ranked No. 4) on a list of big cities, all of which are bested by Los Angeles.

New York placed third, Ann Arbor fourth and Chicago fifth.

Both smaller cities, Madison and Ann Arbor, respective homes of the University of Wisconsin and the University of Michigan, also are essentially one-school towns.

Greater Los Angeles, as you know, has too many to list, but we'll give you a sample: Caltech, UCLA, USC, Occidental, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Northridge, Claremont McKenna, Pomona College and more.

A spokeswoman for the app says Skout analysts “scoured through 12 months of data among 18- to 24-year-olds in college towns across the U.S.” to come up with the list.

“Skout also found that the most generous college-age adults in the U.S. are also in Los Angeles,” the site states. “Young adults using Skout in L.A. share more virtual gifts with friends than all the college-age adults in Boston, Miami, Chicago and Dallas combined.”

Take that, Travel + Leisure readers: Your kids certainly seem to like L.A.
