L.A. County is about 1.5 million adult vaccinations away from reaching community immunity, or “herd immunity,” according to L.A. Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer.

While updating the county Monday, Ferrer identified the keys to reaching herd immunity, saying that to reach the 80% threshold, 1.5 million more eligible adults would have to be vaccinated.

Ferrer also noted that L.A. County would have to continue averaging 400,000 weekly vaccinations to reach herd immunity by mid to late July.

“At the rate we’re going, we expect that we can reach this level somewhere in mid or late July,” Ferrer said Monday. “That assumes that we continue to at least have 400,000 people vaccinated each week. That would include both first doses that people need as well as their second doses.”

Herd immunity would mean the county has sufficient indirect protection from the spread of COVID-19, with enough people immune to infection.

There are currently 755 vaccination sites located throughout L.A. County, from pharmacies and clinics, to popup sites led by L.A. city and county.

As of this week, all city of Los Angeles-run vaccination sites are taking walk-ups without appointments, including the Dodger Stadium and USC locations, as well as all L.A. County run-sites such as in the Pomona Fairplex and the Forum in Inglewood.
