Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino announced he will be running for Mayor of L.A. in 2022.

Councilman Buscaino, a San Pedro-native, has represented the 15th district of L.A. since 2012 after Supervisor Janice Hahn left the seat vacant in 2011.

“This is a city that welcomed my immigrant parents to its shores, a city that has given my family so much, a city that I have committed my life to,” Buscaino said in a statement. “I believe in this city. I have much more to give to it, and I know we can do better. That’s why I am announcing my candidacy for Mayor of Los Angeles.”

According to a media release on his run for mayor, Buscaino formally filed paperwork with the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission, Monday, and has started fundraising.

The release also states that Buscaino’s platforms will center around “reimagining” Los Angeles, post-pandemic and in his campaign web site, Buscaino says, “This is not about going back to normal. It’s about being exceptional.”

Buscaino served in the LAPD for 15 years before being elected to serve in the L.A. City Council. He is still in the LAPD Reserve Corps and received support from the L.A. Police Protective League during his run for council.

During his run for council in 2011, Buscaino changed his party from Republican to Democrat.

Mayor Eric Garcetti will have served the limit of two terms after this year and cannot run for a third term.
