So, you're a municipal representative in a city where nearly one of every two people is Latino, and you had the sole “no” vote on a measure that would boycott Arizona over an immigration law most Latinos (seven out of 10) oppose?

The law allows police to ask people they stop for proof of legal residence in the United States. The council's motion was introduced by council members Janice Hahn and Ed Reyes. The vote was 13-1. What do you have to say for yourself … Councilman Greig Smith? We put the question to his spokesman, who gave us this statement from Smith:

“The Hahn motion is not in the economic best interests of the city of Los Angeles,” states the Northwest Valley representative. “I have always opposed using the Los Angeles City Council to weigh in on non-related social issues that are not within the purview of Los Angeles. I voted no on the motion to boycott Arizona.”

Yes he can.
