A Los Angeles Police Department officer was behind bars overnight after authorities alleged he tried to kill his estranged wife.

More specifically, the L.A. County District Attorney's office claims that Jose Robert Figueroa threatened to kill his wife, choked her until she passed out, and tied her up.

It all allegedly happened …

… Sunday at the victim's apartment in Inglewood, prosecutors said.

Figueroa was arrested at 1:45 a.m. Monday by Inglewood police, according to L.A. County Sheriff's Department inmate records.

According to a D.A.'s statement yesterday he has been charged on suspicion of “attempted murder, injuring a spouse with the added allegation that he inflicted great bodily injury and making criminal threats.”

The officer was scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 this morning for bail review. Figueroa's bail was set at $2.5 million, which might make it hard for even an officer to get out of jail.

Figueroa's arraignment was scheduled for June 4, D.A.'s officials said. If prosecutors are successful in their case against him, the cop could end up behind bars for life, they said.

The alleged crimes were being investigated by the Inglewood Police Department.

An LAPD spokesman told us that the case would have to run its course before any potential personnel moves could be considered. Figueroa will be placed on paid leave until that, he said.
