The Los Angeles City Council on Monday put off massive layoffs but agreed to cut 761 city employees in order to reduce $585 million in red ink.

Approval of the $6.7 billion budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 came late Monday as the council voted to let city unions have until Oct. 1 to come up with solutions that would put off thousands of more layoffs. Those solutions would include wage and retirement concessions.

“Today, we came together to protect the priorities that make Los Angeles a strong and a great city, making sure that we — in tough economicmtimes — had a balanced budget based on real numbers that protects our core services but also moves forward with structural reforms,'' council President Eric Garcetti said.
