Liz OhanesianSunday was World Goth Day and with that came the end of voting for the annual World Goth Day Awards. The winners were announced on Monday and we were happy to see that several people from the L.A. scene received awards. Best Club Night: Release the Bats
Long Beach's long-running monthly party Release the Bats took World Goth Day's top honors in the club night category. Launched in 1998, Release the Bats takes place on the fourth Friday of the month and focuses on live bands and classic gothic and death rock sounds. The next party is this Friday and will feature a live set from Mephisto Walz. The club's Facebook page notes that this is the band's last U.S. show before their European tour.

Best Female Vocalist: Monica Richards
Monica Richards is well-known as one of the strongest, and most eclectic, vocalists in the goth scene. She started out playing in D.C. hardcore bands and went on to front the dark and ethereal Strange Boutique. She's perhaps best known for her work as part of Faith and the Muse, but she's also an accomplished solo artist and is currently working on a new solo album, Naiades.

Best New Song: Christ vs. Warhol “Dissent”
L.A. band Christ vs. Warhol features eveghost, Steven James and Marzia Rangel, all of whom were in Scarlet's Remains, along with Geoff Bruce (of Anima Mundi). They released their debut album, Dissent, last year, the title track of which received World Goth Day's “Best New Song” award.
