Kraft Foods is recalling 1.2 million cases of cottage cheese because of “out-of-standard storage temperatures,” according to a statement released by the company.  The recalled brands include Knudsen, Breakstone's, Simply Kraft and Daily Chef. 

“Some ingredients used in these products were not stored in accordance with Kraft's temperature standards,” the company says. “While unlikely, this could create conditions that could lead to premature spoilage and/or foodborne illness; therefore, the company is issuing the recall as a precaution.”

(We can only speculate, but we imagine this means someone left their crates of cottage cheese sitting in their semi parked outside a Fresno strip club for several hours.) 

“You should be ashamed at yourselves!” one Karen O'Donovan Dupray told Kraft on their Facebook page. No one likes bad dairy.

The affected products all have code dates from May 9, 2014 through July 23, 2014, and they were distributed throughout the United States. (Date codes can be found on the bottom of the cup or on the top of the package.) For a complete list of the recalled products, which include plain varieties as well as those with fruit, click here. Costco and Sam's Club are apparently already reaching out to customers who bought the questionable cottage cheese. 

The manufacturing facility in Tulare, Calif. –  where the products are made –  has halted production and distribution of the affected cases of cottage cheese while the company deals with the issue.

“We sincerely apologize for not meeting your expectations with these recalled products,” Kraft says on its Facebook page  “We're investigating how this happened and will take the necessary steps to ensure it doesn't happen again.”

“I have eaten 4 Breakstone's 4 oz Low Fat Cottage with Pineapple with an expiration date of May 20 during the past week and consumed one 4 oz container yesterday with Exp date of June 4. What illness should I expect and when?” asked one Linda Ludwig. Kraft asked her to PM them, while another Facebook user helpfully chimed in: “You can expect SEVERE stomach pain and diarrhea and the chills, it's been a week and I still can't eat hardly.”

If you have any of the potentially bad cottage cheese in your fridge, you can return it to the store where it was purchased for an exchange or refund. Call Kraft Consumer Relations at 1-800-396-6307 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. (EST) if you have any questions or are upset about your Cheesy Beefy Stuffed Peppers, and they will try to talk you down.
