One of 19 firefighters who died in an Arizona firestorm over the weekend was a native Southern Californian whose father is L.A. County Fire Department Capt. Joe Woyjeck, authorities confirmed today.

Twenty-one-year-old Kevin Woyjeck attended Los Alamitos High School as well as Santa Ana College, according to his Facebook page:

The L.A. County Fire Department today said that the younger Woyjeck was a Granite Mountain Hotshot Crew member based out of Prescott, Arizona who was assigned to the now 8,000-acre Yarnell Hill Fire.

The blaze near Congress, Arizona was believed to have been sparked by lightening. As it quickly spread yesterday Woyjeck and his fellow firefighters deployed temporary shelters but succumbed to flames.

The department says he's a “former member of LACoFD Explorer Post 9 and also once worked for Care Ambulance Service in Southern California.”
