2 Bicyclists Pronounced Dead after Hit-and-Run Collision on Pontatoc Road

TUCSON, AZ (March 22, 2022) – Saturday, Kenneth Cook and Gretchen Cook were killed, and Ryan Machado was arrested in a Sunset Drive crash.

Officials responded to the scene near Pontatoc Road around 9:45 a.m.

Per preliminary investigation, a Cadillac Escalade struck two cyclists were heading east on Sunrise Drive.

The Cadillac was driven by 26-year-old Machado, who immediately drove away from the scene upon impact. Crews were able to later locate the suspect at the intersection of River and Alvernon Road.

As a result, authorities arrested Machado and booked him into the Pima County Adult Detention Center for manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal collision, criminal damage, and driving under the influence.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medical personnel pronounced the two cyclists dead at the scene. Police identified the victims as 74-year-old Kenneth Cook and 62-year-old Gretchen Cook.
