It's 90°. The whir of air-conditioning units echoes through the streets. The sweet allure of ice cream beckons. Here to help is Quenelle, opening soon in Burbank with gelato, ice cream sandwiches, bonbons and more.

Also opening is Little Beast in Eagle Rock, from husband-and-wife duo Deborah Schwartz and Sean Lowenthal, formerly sous chef at Chateau Marmont. Schwartz, who met her husband at the Silverlake Dog Park a few years ago (their two dogs were in the wedding), helped find and design the space. “We found the old craftsman house that used to be Larkin's — it reminded us of our own home, and we spent about five months building it out to look and feel like our home,” Schwartz says. “The name came after many lists, we settled on The Little Beast after my son, Miles.”

Other recent openings include Scratch|Bar in Beverly Hills. Chef-owner Phillip Lee makes nearly everything from scratch (hence the name), including the bread, cheese and ginger beers. Russian restaurant Mari Vanna has replaced Bastide in West Hollywood. And Tyler King, owner of Coffee Commissary in West Hollywood, is working on a third location in Burbank.

Empress Pavilion locked its doors for the last time after operating in Chinatown for the past 24 years. Geisha House on Sunset Boulevard closed after nine years and West Hollywood's Mirabelle closed after 43 years in business.
