“The weather is with us today,” exclaims JR as he readies the next sheet of A3 for posting. LA Weekly arrived at his third location for “The Wrinkles of the City,” LA edition, and was greeted by the spry, excited Frenchman fashionably covered in wheat paste. It is cold and windy in the shade, but the downtown crew is glad for the dry weather despite the forecast. We are part of a small ensemble amid the scaffolding. Now and again, neighbors walk by and stare. The building owner is quietly busy in his workshop.
JR's collage of an elderly man in a western themed shirt goes up in a goo-covered orderly fashion. As the last piece is placed and everyone cheers, the building owner next door offers his wall for tomorrow. The metal skeleton is unceremoniously folded into the back of a pickup truck and then the cameras come out. Across the street, up close with the artist, this temporary work of art is recorded for history. Bicycle cops roll by with a double take and stop. Everyone scatters.
