Stolen Vehicle Crash near Cohasset Road Left Driver Dead

CHICO, CA (June 14, 2023) – Tuesday evening, Joshua Payan was killed in a stolen vehicle crash at a Chico intersection.

Several officials responded to the incident around 9:45 p.m. between East Avenue and Cohasset Road.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered two vehicles with significant damages. Fire units from the Chico Fire Department also used power tools to extricate one of the occupants from a silver Hyundai.

Tragically, the occupant of the other vehicle sustained major injuries and died at the scene.

According to the police, an officer attempted to pull over what appeared to be a stolen blue Dodge sedan along East and Mariposa Avenues. However, the driver did not comply and sped off. Reports stated that the officer did not continue the pursuit due to slippery road conditions.

Subsequently, the blue Dodge collided with a silver Hyundai after running past a red light on East Avenue and Cohasset Road.

Paramedics transported the Hyundai driver to Enloe Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

Later, the Butte County Coroner’s office identified the deceased driver of the stolen Dodge as 33-year-old Joshua Payan of Chico.

Sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the victims. Thoughts are with them during this very difficult time.
