On February 13, Jose Roman was shot dead near the corner of West 1st and South Palos Verdes streets, just a couple hundred yards from Port of Los Angeles High School.

LAPD officers, after responding to reports of gunfire, discovered the 18-year-old Latino around 6 p.m. suffering with gunshot wounds in his back.

Roman was taken by paramedics to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the shooting possibly stemmed from an altercation:

Homicide detectives believe Roman was one of four men standing outside a residence on Palos Verdes when an argument broke out and escalated into a fistfight. Detectives believe the shooting was gang-related.

At the time, police were searching for the alleged shooter, who was described as a Latino man with long, curly hair and wearing a baggy white shirt.

The incident occurred in a residential neighborhood, just two short blocks from a shopping center and a museum.
