81-Year-Old Cyclist Killed, Suspect Arrested after Hit-and-Run near Inyo Street

TULARE, CA (November 28, 2022) – Sunday, Jose Lopez was fatally struck by Manuel Vincent Gomez in a hit-and-run on I Street.

Per reports, the driver of a speeding Chevrolet pickup-truck struck a cyclist near Inyo Street. Upon impact, the driver fled the scene without rendering aid to the victim.

Medics arrived and transported the cyclist, 81-year-old Lopez to a nearby hospital. There, medical personnel later pronounced him dead.

Video footage from the scene was used to track down the suspect who was later located and arrested. Consequently, police arrested 34-year-old Gomez and took him into custody with charges of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.

Crews closed down a large portion of the roadway for cleanup and preliminary duties. At this time, an active investigation into the fatal incident near Inyo Street is currently ongoing.
