Chef John Sedlar has just announced that Playa will be closing after service this Wednesday. From the email statement we received:

It is with bittersweet sentiment that Playa will host its last service this Wednesday, March 6th. While the restaurant has been critically successful and John has tremendously enjoyed the creative process of introducing Baja and Mexi-China inspired menus to Angelenos, the concept has not met the high expectations John and Bill set for it when opening two years ago. With that in mind, they'll be taking a few weeks to close and retool before reopening with something entirely new and very exciting in the space. We'd like to extend our gratitude to each and every one of our friends, colleagues and loyal diners for their endless support these past two years.

It comes as quite a surprise. When I visited the restaurant a few weeks ago it was extremely busy. It just goes to show the fragile nature of restaurant economics.

We'll keep you updated on the nature of the new concept as that info becomes available.
