The memorial for John Chase will take place tomorrow 4 pm to 7 pm at Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood. Chase was West Hollywood's urban planner for fourteen years. He died Friday, August 13 at his home in Los Angeles.

LA Weekly contributor Tibby Rothman writes movingly about Chase at The Architect's Newspaper Blog. She gets at the complicated mix of emotions that follow the death of a good friend.

All weekend-long, as people–an extraordinary far flung tribe–talked to me of John's passing, I kept saying that the only person who should be allowed to grieve his passing was his husband, Jon Cowan. I know that John would be distraught, deeply upset to have left Jon this way. He would never have done that if he'd been given any choice. But I admit that such tough talk was a deep Ed Moses-alpha male lie. I cannot come to terms with John's death. With his passing. It's very selfish on my part: none of us can turn to him again.

Some things you might not have known about Chase: he drove a red Mercedes, and before opening his own practice, he was an Imagineer for Walt Disney.
