22-Year-Old Woman Arrested after Wrong-Way Collision near Airport Boulevard in Watsonville

Watsonville, CA (March 3, 2021) – Early Monday morning, police arrested 22-year-old Johanna Mayapuga after a fatal DUI crash on Highway 1.

California Highway Patrol arrived to the scene around 12:17 a.m., after receiving reports of a serious head-on collision.

Mayapuga, a Santa Cruz resident, was driving the wrong way in a 2015 Nissan when she struck a 2002 BMW, just south of Airport Boulevard. As a result, a 45-year-old woman from Moss Landing died on scene. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner Office will release the deceased victim’s name once the family members are notified.

Meanwhile, Mayapuga was charged with a suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

At this time, the police continue to investigate the cause of the collision. More information will be released once available.
