After responding to a call made at 8:20 p.m. on January 28, LAPD officers found Joey Gutierrez close to the corner of 43rd and Main Streets in South Central. The 23-year-old Latino man, who was bleeding from the neck, was quickly rushed to California Hospital Medical Center.

According to coroner's reports, Gutierrez died from the gunshot wound just before 10 p.m.

A busy market is located just down the street from where he was killed, and a nursery school is situated half a block away.

The Los Angeles Times reported that detectives had no description of the shooter, but they believed the shooting to gang-related at the time.

Note: Due to technical difficulties, the LA Weekly's archive of all homicides within Los Angeles city limits was discontinued near the end of last year. We will be rolling out the 2011 homicides, one by one, until our “Murder was the Case” archive is up to date. Thanks for your patience.
