69-year-old Joel Beltran of El Centro Injured in Holtville Crash on State Route 115
HOLTVILLE, CA (March 2, 2021) – Joel Beltran, 69, of El Centro, was injured in a mass fatality crash in Holtville, California, around 6 am on Tuesday morning.
Beltran was driving a 2011 Peterbilt tractor-trailer going northbound on Route 115 near Norrish Road. For unknown reasons, a Ford Expedition carrying 25 people, veered into the intersection. This caused the big rig to crash into the left side of the SUV. The resulting collision killed at least 13 of the SUV’s passengers.
Due to not wearing seatbelts, several people were ejected from the Ford. As a result of the crash, Beltran was transported to Desert Regional Medical center for treatment following moderate injuries.
Authorities from multiple agencies continue to investigate the cause of the crash. The identities of the SUV passengers have not yet been released.
When driving or riding as a passenger, always wear a seatbelt. This prevents ejection from a vehicle if in an accident. Additionally, keep your eyes on the road at all times. Finally, always drive defensively to avoid a crash.
