President Joe Biden spoke in support of California Gov. Gavin Newsom during his final campaign stop before the September 14 gubernatorial recall election.

The president landed in Southern California Monday night and addressed the crowd at Long Beach City College, calling the election a “republican recall,” a phrase that has been a staple in the Newsom campaign, and comparing Republican candidate Larry Elder to former president Donald Trump.

“This year, the leading Republican running for governor is the closest thing to a Trump clone that I’ve ever seen in your state.” Biden said about Elder. “He’s the clone of Donald Trump. Can you imagine him being governor of this state? You can’t let that happen. There’s too much at stake.”

That was one of many verbal criticisms of Elder, with Newsom also pointing out negative comparisons to Trump and a viral edited clip of Elder saying slave owners should have received reparations for “losing their property.”

“In the ‘You can’t make it up’ file, did you see the video that just came out,” Newsom said about the clip. “Where Larry Elder, reflecting on the state of California becoming the first state in the country to begin to explore the issue of reparations, he said, ‘What about reparations for slave owners?'”

Elder has also been on the offensive during his campaign, bringing forward activist and former actress Rose McGowan during a Sunday event in Los Angeles, who accused Newsom’s wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom of bribery and an attempt to “silence” her about rape allegations against Harvey Weinstein.

Later that day, McGowan sent out a series of tweets, alleging that Jennifer attempted to meet with Rose, but Rose canceled when she suspected Jennifer’s invites were “false gestures.” She later writes that there were connections between herself, Newsom and the Boies Schiller Law Firm, who represented Weinstein.

Siebel Newsom’s office called the allegations by McGowan a “complete fabrication,” according to the Associated Press and Gov. Newsom called Larry Elder “desperate” and that it “just shows you how low things go in campaigns these days.”

Newsom followed McGowan during the campaign event, and spoke on “the way I’ve been treated during this campaign.” He then went on to address news stories calling him sexist over an article he said he wrote more than 20 years ago, detailing a study from the University of Pennsylvania, that found women to be less knowledgeable about politics than men because they get their information from local news media.

“I’ve written 1,200 articles. I’ve written an article once a week since April of 1998,” Elder said. “I wrote about the fact that women make more money than men. I wrote about the fact that there are more women in college than men. I wrote about the fact that when it comes to medical school and law school, the percentages of men and women entering is now the same. No one mentions that, but you find some article where I was quoting someone else and suddenly I am a sexist pig.
