Shootings don't happen everyday in tony Encino. In fact, they barely happen at all.

That's why the LAPD today said it had a mystery on its hands. A 47-year-old man whom a detective described to us as someone in the jewelry business was gunned down in his own driveway early yesterday evening, police said.

He's alive – at a hospital in critical condition, cops said:

The detective told LA Weekly the attack did not appear to involve a robbery. He declined to identify the man, saying only that he was in the jewelry business. Whether he was a retailer, wholesaler, or something else wasn't clear, he said.

The shooting was reported at 5:50 p.m. in the 4900 block of Rupert Avenue, the LAPD said in a statement:

Upon their [officers'] arrival, they found the victim down in his driveway suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.

The man's wife discovered her husband down in the driveway and called 911, police said.

The shooter was described as a man in his 50s who might have fled in a dark pickup or silver Porsche, according to the LAPD.

The detective said investigators were looking into the usual possibilities, including whether or not the victim might have had any business beefs.
