Added: Authorities over the weekend identified the officer as 48-year-old Jesus Ravega of West Covina

An off-duty Los Angeles police officer died today following a motorcycle accident on the 101 freeway downtown.

An LAPD statement says the 24-year veteran was headed north on the 101 near the 110 interchange when the accident happened shortly after 11 a.m:

” … As he was passing a Big Rig truck, he lost control of his motorcycle and fell.”

According to police …

The passing truck ran over the officer's motorcycle and then the officer.

City News Service reported that witnesses stopped and tried to help.

The officer, whose name was not released because his loved ones had not yet been notified of his death, was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where he was pronounced at 2:30 p.m., according to the LAPD.

The department says the officer was assigned to the Foothill Division's detectives team.
