The office of state Attorney General Jerry Brown announced “a major new development” in its investigation of the exorbitant salaries given to Bell city officials. In July the A.G.'s office announced its investigation; the next month Brown subpoenaed personal financial records of the highly paid officials and ordered them to give depositions.

In a statement released late Tuesday Brown's office also stated it will expand “his probe into excessive compensation paid to officials” in other local governments. A 10 a.m. press conference was scheduled to take place at Brown's downtown L.A. office.

The Bell salary scandal broke early this summer when the Los Angels Times revealed a nearly $800,000-a-year salary for city manager Robert Rizzo and a police chief that made more than the president of the United States.

Fox 11 news later reported that Rizzo's take-home pay was more like $1.5 million.
