26-Year-Old Police Officer Dead after Multi-Vehicle Collision near San Pablo Dam Road

SAN PABLO, CA (January 19, 2022) – Authorities identified Jerrick Bernstein as the victim of a 4-car crash on Interstate 80 Sunday morning.

The incident occurred around 6:15 a.m., on the eastbound lanes of the freeway, just west of San Pablo Dam Road.

According to reports, the driver of a transit van driver lost control and hit the center divider. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

Eventually, the van came to stop in the wrong direction of the freeway. As a result, at least three passing cars struck the van as it was stopped on the road.

Due to the impact of the collision, a man in his mid-20s occupying one of the vehicles died at the scene. The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased victim as 25-year-old Bernstein, of Hercules.

In addition, paramedics transported two other people to a local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

Meanwhile, the crash closed Interstate 80 for more than three hours before it was later reopened. At this time, the deadly incident is still under active investigation.

No words can mend the broken hearts and sorrow felt during this delicate moment. Deepest condolences and sympathies are with the family and friends of Jerrick Bernstein.
