Local pop singer Jenny March plays the Geometro Party XI this week as she prepares for the release of her forthcoming “Rebound” single, so we chatted.

L.A. WEEKLY: When did you start singing, writing and performing, and when did you realize it could be a career?

JENNY MARCH: I’ve been singing and performing since I was in elementary school. I started in choir, school shows, and the summer musical theater programs around my hometown, Cincinnati, as well as Stagedoor Manor in New York. A few years after I moved to L.A. and had been acting for a while, I realized that I could make music a career too. I was 16 and went to my first writing session for my first Baby EP (that was taken down years ago so you can’t go check it out). I went to Chapman University for a BFA in Screen Acting but then decided to move back to L.A. to focus on music and I finished at Berklee College of Music online.

Describe your sound/style…

I don’t know if I can really define it yet, since I feel like my music last year (lyric content and production) is a little different than the music I’m doing right now. It keeps evolving as I’m changing, growing and learning more about myself. I’m a bit of a chameleon with my music. I just write how I feel, and the reality is, in a year or two those feelings and interests will likely be different.

How and why did you come to move from Ohio to L.A.? What do you think of the music scene here?

It’s kind of surreal actually … my parents told me that if I had siblings, it would never have been possible for me to move to L.A., or at least not as soon as I did (I definitely knew what I wanted to do at a young age, and I wanted to be in a big city so if my move didn’t happen when it did, I know I would have made it to L.A. eventually). Back when I was 14, I went to a workshop put on by my acting agency in Cincinnati with an L.A. manager, and after the workshop, he asked me to sign with his agency. He talked to my mom and me for hours trying to convince us to move to L.A. to pursue the dream. Short story, we talked it over as a family, Dad agreed, and I moved to L.A. with my mom. Music was always my main passion, but I didn’t understand how to get into the business until I saw some friends doing it. I don’t really know how it happened, but it just did.

I think the music scene is great here! There’s so much talent and it’s been really cool seeing more and more female artists supporting one another. It is a competitive business, but it is a big world and there’s room for many pop stars. Obviously, there are some crappy parts to this business, but that’s true with any business, right?

What can we expect from this show?

Well for one, I get to perform on a retro car in a DTLA warehouse building and just go freaking ham on it. It’s going to be a packed show! It turns into a sick party after, and I’m always one who is up for a really fun party filled with music lovers. There’s a few other artists playing too so I’m really excited to watch them. I’ll be singing my song “FUWY,” which I think is pretty fitting.

You have a song, “Rebound,” dropping next month — tell us about that. What else do you have going on this year?

I do! I can’t wait to finally release it since I wrote it almost 2 years ago. “Rebound” is about a guy that I had a five- year crush on, but couldn’t ever let him know it because he was in a relationship the whole time. One day they broke up, and when I saw him at a party, he wanted to hook up. I couldn’t do that. I didn’t want to be that girl to him. I literally saw my future so clearly with him, and I wanted him to be my boyfriend, not just a random hook up buddy.

As for this year, I’m dropping “Rebound” and a music video to follow it. I’m performing a lot of shows around L.A. and just digging deep inside my soul to pull out some inspiring music for y’all. Stay tuned!

Jenny March plays on Friday, August 30 at Geo Xi.
