I've always had a really creative family. My mom taught my sister and me that we could live out our fantasies. I don't want to sound like a crazy plugging-my-book person, but when I was in high school, I was having a really hard time. I was trying to find who I was, so I would try different things, and the kids would make fun of me, because one day I would be into this '50s-glamour-Michelle-Pfeiffer-in-Grease-2-tight-pencil-skirt and teasing my hair, and the next day I would do this complete Siouxsie Sioux goth-rock thing. I was searching for years for a mantra that was going to help me out of this depression that I was going through, and in a dream one night I thought, “Life is a movie starring me,” and that became this whole way of life. I was always so obsessed with films that I started thinking every morning when I woke up, if life is a movie starring me, then I can create any set I want, I can wear any wardrobe, create my character and the whole script of my life. And I started to write a book, Life Is a Movie Starring You, and I wrote it in my bedroom. I created my room in a very silent-movie-set-esque way. I thought, wouldn't it be amazing to live in a room where Valentino could stage a seduction — where it's just velvets and leopard and a rock-royalty look with a lot of decadence — but done on a tight budget! I can wake up and be in a rock & roll '70s mood, put on bell-bottoms and listen to the Rolling Stones, or I can put on a flapper dress and live a really old-fashioned life. Those are my two different worlds that I live in. I was born in the '70s, but my favorite decade is the '20s and the Art Deco period. My room has a '70s interpretation of the '20s — it's a more exaggerated version of Art Deco that I call Deco Disco. That's where the disco ball comes in on the top of my armoire. Ultimately, my room is a place to dream, not just a place to sleep.
