One Dead, One Arrested after Multi-Vehicle Crash on Grand Avenue

SURPRISE, AZ (April 15, 2022) – Police arrested Dewey Sigler after a vehicle collision along Grand Avenue killed Jeffrey C Hilbert.

The crash happened on Grand Avenue near 163rd Avenue at around 11:30 a.m. last Monday, where Sigler was reportedly driving a rented Penske box truck, initially hitting a Toyota vehicle.

The crash sent the Toyota off the road, injuring two people. Sigler’s truck struck a Nissan Altima, driven by Hilbert; later identified on Tuesday. Shortly after hitting the Nissan, he ran into a semi-truck as well. Unfortunately, 69-year-old Jeffrey Hilbert was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to court documents, first responders attempted to treat Sigler in the back of a DPS vehicle. Medical crews transported him to the hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, Sigler’s toxicology testing indicated “a probable positive for methamphetamines,” according to court filings, and investigators are awaiting the results of additional blood tests.

After Sigler discharged from the hospital, he was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on suspicion of homicide and narcotics possession.

The crash remains under active investigation.
