Jeff Kent, the refreshingly candid Dodger who holds the Major League record for most home runs hit by a second baseman, is retiring. The L.A. Times reported today that the 40-year-old Kent will make the announcement at a Dodger Stadium news conference tomorrow.

During his four years in L.A., Kent, the National League MVP in 2000, hit 73 of his 377 career homers — ranking him only behind Davey Lopes and Jackie Robinson for most Dodger home runs by a second baseman. San Francisco Chronicle sports blogger Henry Schulman describes Kent's “serial killer smile” and the way he flashed it once while retrieving a dead dove from a trash can. (It had been dispatched by a Randy Johnson fastball.)
