Miles Davis may have given us Birth of the Cool and Digable Planets provided “Rebirth of the Slick”, but crooner Jose James delivers a whole new jazz baby altogether. The Minnesota-born, London-based singer spawns a new jazz sound that is both back-to-basics and forward thinking. His voice is red wine; it's imbued with deep and rich textures, soaked in smokiness, and flavored with a hint of swagger. James' laid back, classy joints never lean toward elevator music, or waiting room somnambulism.

James isn't R 'n' B, or horn blasting, floor-stomping soul revivalism. He's soulful not soul, tipping his hat more to Sammy Davis Jr. and Curtis Mayfield than D'Angelo. But James' music is distinct not derivative, and on his album, “Black Magic,” he pushes boundaries further by enlisting L.A.'s beat guru, Flying Lotus for some aural assistance.

Tomorrow, Jose James will be featured on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, but tonight he plays Zanzibar with Danish throwback popsters Quadron.

After the jump, download and listen to Jose James jams produced by Flying Lotus.
