How bad is the economy? If you listen to the National Wildlife Federation, which is getting on the loathsome stay-cation bandwagon by pushing The Great American Backyard Campout, this bad: “Turn off computers, TVs, iPods, Wiis, MP3 players, cell phones and all things high-tech, to experience a night with Mother Nature, listen for nocturnal wildlife (maybe even see a few), stargaze, cook outdoors, tell stories about Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster, and explore a whole other world right in their [sic] own backyard.” Um, no thanks! If you must be among the trees and stars, head for Hollywood Bowl’s Sgt. Pepper’s . . . Revisited. Cheap Trick and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra perform the album in its entirety. As a bonus, Gomez singer Ian Ball, Billy Corgan and Nina Simone’s daughter Simone will be there. And the audience does “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” as if it’s been practicing since 1967. Sorry, but you’re not getting anywhere near David Sedaris at Vroman’s today, so instead of a trip to the Pasadena bookstore, how about a little — make that a lot of — ocean air? Come to the re-opening of the the historic (by L.A. standards) Malibu Pier, built in 1905. The pier’s been shut down since a storm damaged it in 1995. The party’s a benefit for the Malibu Legacy Park Project, and you can check out the new Surfing Museum while enjoying hors d’oeuvres from the Beachcomber; a Ketel One ice bar serving up Gidget’s gimlets, Catalina sunsets and Zuma surfers; swing band Stompy Jones and a wine tasting. Yeah, my invitation got lost in the mail too. A portion of the ticket price and all of the proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Malibu Legacy Park Project; the park will be constructed in the Malibu Civic Center area, directly adjacent to significant natural resources. It will simultaneously improve water quality, restore native riparian habitat and preserve crucial open space. WEDNESDAY, July 2

The 1968 Tony Palmer–directed music documentary, All My Loving — with the Beatles, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, the Who, Donovan, Cream and Frank Zappa — screens as part of the Mods & Rockers Film Festival, along with world premieres of Robyn Hitchcock: Sex, Food, Death … and Insects and The Pink Floyd & Syd Barrett Story. It’s Fourth of July Eve, a perfect night to celebrate on the mainland with musicians from our 50th state. And since there aren’t going to be any fireworks at the Santa Monica Pier this year, you might as well come out a day early and listen to Hawai’ian music stars Keali’i Reichel, Na Leo and Weldon Kekauoha, who are putting together a One Hawai’i tribute to the mainland for the pier’s Twilight Dance Series. Please note the diacritical mark in the state’s name. They are very touchy about their vowels in the 50th state.
