Suspected DUI Driver Arrested Following Auto Accident near South Avenue

CHICO, CA (January 13, 2022) – Police arrested 34-year-old Javier Mojica after a DUI accident on North Avenue early Monday morning.

The collision occurred at the intersection of North and East Avenues at 12:01 a.m. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after.

According to Chico police, Mojica crashed into an apartment on North Avenue for reasons unknown.

During investigations, Mojica informed authorities that the real driver had escaped on foot. However, police claimed that the statement was false. Eventually, officers arrested and charged Mojica with a DUI.

Although no one was injured, the collision broke a gas line where the car collided with the building, requiring the evacuation of the whole complex’s individual units.

All tenants later moved back inside the complex even though electricity and water were not turned back on. In addition, officials closed the intersection for cleanup and preliminary investigations.

At this time, an active investigation is still currently underway.

Driving under the influence is one of the most dangerous things you can do as a driver. If you find yourself unable to safely drive, you can always contact a Lyft or Uber instead.
